Having traveled to so many places that really embrace their history and tourist attractions I've come to appreciate what the Metro Detroit has to offer. With that said I know its my job to help support our gems in the hopes that people from outside our state can enjoy them when they come. Heck, maybe the purpose of their trip is to visit them.
I am a member at the Henry Ford. It's been a few years now too. I bought it when I was in college mainly for a paper I wrote but also a Disney exhibition that was coming. It was cheaper if I just bought a yearly pass. Since then I can't get rid of it because I know that they depend on that money to operate. It gives me a sort of satisfaction that I am doing a small part in bettering our region. Plus, if you break down the price you realize that over 12 months it's too much of a bargain to pass up.
Other places I have considered getting a membership include:
The Detroit Zoo
Detroit Historical Museum
Detroit Institute of Arts
The majority of people who complain that these don't live up to their equivalents in bigger cities more than likely A) Don't visit them B) Don't Support them C) Don't know what they are talking about. It's unfair when the daily traffic is significantly less here for numerous reasons. But you have a chance to change that by encouraging people to visit these places instead of constantly giving them a bad reputation.
The more people we have spreading good maybe then will we buck the trend and once again build a new and encouraging image for our region.

Just back from vacation...
I did a lot of thinking this past vacation about my life for some odd reason. I realized that by not writing on at least a weekly basis, I am probably going to get rusty at this whole...journalism thing. So I've decided to start a blog on something I both enjoy and try to do as often as possible, traveling. Hopefully it will keep up its side of the bargain.
I hit a sort of milestone this year by traveling to my 38th state. I can't believe there are only 12 left, 10 in the continental US. I was stuck for so long but the last few years I have really started to get around. It was also a trip that took me to my 5th major brewery. They all basically do the same thing but I'm still amazed every time. The final milestone was the visitation of my 18th MLB ballpark.
Vacations have revolved around MLB ballparks for sometime now. It's tradition to scope out which team is nearby and plan the vacation during a home stand. Growing up with three brothers I'm thankful my mom has never had a problem with this. This year was tough with the 90 degree weather and enourmous amount of bugs. But was the first time we got to see our home team on the road.
I enjoyed our time in St. Louis and wouldn't mind going back there at some point for a longer period of time. I've only been there twice now and both times were only for a day. Cities have so much to offer and most of the time you don't realize it till your actually there.
Our Condo was a little over three hours away in city called Osage Beach. The resort sat on the Lake of the Ozarks. It's a great location for the summer months. It was right on the lake and offered us some spectacular views of the State Park perfectly located across from our unit. The water was warm and the lake wasn't crowded during the week giving us an oppurtunity to do a little tubing.
Hopefully I'll stick to my promise and update this as often as I'd like too. Currently in the process of getting a Chicago trip together...no way it will trump the last one. Maybe I will post on that extravaganza. Untill next time....
